HOLLYWOOD, CA — Film industry analysts said that James Cameron's Avatar franchise may not be a film franchise at all, but a clever multi-million dollar money laundering scheme.

Experts said it was currently unclear where the money was coming from and what it's being used for, but suspected that illicit money laundering was the best explanation for the existence of the movies.

"I haven't talked to a single person who remembers actually watching these movies," said financial crimes investigator Chet Biggins. "I've talked to everyone — my friends, family, and neighbors — and not a single soul recalls seeing any of these supposed 'films' in theaters, despite them making billions of dollars."

"Yeah, something's not right here."

James Cameron protested the accusations. "My Avatar films are beloved around the world! Everyone comes to see them! They're masterpieces, I tell you! Masterpieces!"

Other theories suggested that the films never existed at all, but were rather a collective fever dream triggered by a glitch in the simulation humanity lives in together.

"That's impossible!" cried Cameron. "I wrote these films myself! They have blue Native American aliens and something called 'unobtainium!' A simulation couldn't think of that!"

At publishing time, analysts announced that Cameron had raked in another $3 billion from the supposed franchise.
