Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised President Trump on Wednesday for hosting a wide-ranging discussion between the two leaders at the NATO summit in The Hague.
“I had a long and substantive meeting with President Trump @POTUS. We covered all the truly important issues. I thank Mr. President, I thank the United States,” Mr. Zelenskyy wrote on X.
Mr. Zelenskyy said the two spoke for about 50 minutes and discussed how to achieve a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. He also reportedly discussed further U.S. investment in Ukrainian defense.
He added that further details of the conversation will be made public later.
On the way to Europe, Mr. Trump acknowledged he would meet with Mr. Zelenskyy.
“He’s a nice guy. I mean, I’m going to meet him today. I don’t know; I assume we’re going to be discussing Ukraine,” he said.
The meeting comes as NATO’s attention is divided between tension in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Since Ukraine is not a member of NATO, Mr. Zelenskyy was not involved in high-level discussions surrounding increased defense spending on Wednesday. He instead met individually with a number of leaders and NATO officials, including Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
