X unveiled its long-format Articles project this week, expanding the type of content on the site.
X’s @Write account announced the introduction of the new format in an article Friday.
According to the post, the new format is available to only X Premium+ subscribers and lets users post articles with up to 100,000 characters. Articles will be separated from typical X posts and relegated to a tab in a user’s profile for easy access.
Users will have more options for customization on articles than on traditional posts. According to X, users can change the formatting by adding italics, bold, strikethrough or hyperlinks to their stories.
Articles are likely the descendant of Twitter’s Notes project, the company’s first foray into long-form content. It was killed once Elon Musk took over the company in late 2022.
Mr. Musk mentioned last July that X was working on this project. He wants users to be able to post long-format work with multimedia elements, saying they could “publish a book” on the social media platform.
The new format comes as Mr. Musk continues to radically change X, adding new features and changing the site’s look. He announced this week that posts would soon no longer show the number of likes it has received and will show only bookmarks and views.
He has also worked to attract exclusive content to X. In the past few months, he has courted the likes of YouTuber MrBeast, conservative commentator Tucker Carlson and former CNN host Don Lemon.
