Social media platform X is rolling out new subscription tiers for users who want to pay a little extra.
Owner Elon Musk in a Friday post told followers that the new tiers would include a cheaper premium plan with no change to advertising and a more expensive tier with no ads.
Mr. Musk did not elaborate on how much the new tiers would cost or when the change would occur. X premium currently costs users $8 a month.
The announcement comes as the platform begins an overhaul of its existing subscription system. This week, X launched in New Zealand and the Philippines its plan to make all users pay for the service.
The test launch will force all new users to pay $1 a year to interact with the site, while users who don’t pay can view X but can’t like or interact with posts. Existing users will be exempt. X leadership has not made it clear when, or if, the policy will be expanded to Western countries.
X Premium, formerly Twitter Blue, is relatively unpopular on the site. Conceived as a way for X to rake in revenue after advertisers left in droves last year, it’s clear that it has not brought in the necessary money. According to estimates, fewer than 1 million users pay for X Premium.
