D.C. police said a woman was shot and killed in a Northwest hotel early Monday, marking the city’s first homicide of the new year.
Metropolitan Police said the female victim, who wasn’t identified, was found inside a seventh-floor room with gunshot wounds at about 1:20 a.m. at the Embassy Suites on Military Road NW.
Authorities haven’t identified a person of interest in the shooting.
Less than an hour later, another woman was injured in a shooting across town in the 1300 block of H Street NE.
Police didn’t provide an update on the woman’s condition. The suspect is described as a Black male with dreads.
Three teens were injured in two separate shootings in Southeast earlier in the day on New Year’s Eve.
Two teen boys were found suffering from gunshot wounds at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of 37th Street SE.
Both boys were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
At about 2 p.m., police said another teen was shot on 19th Street SE. The victim is expected to survive.
Police said a silver Infinity is a vehicle of interest in the shooting on 37th Street SE.
The woman killed in Northwest comes as the District is still reeling from a violent 2023.
The city ended the year with 272 homicides — the most recorded since 1997.
Deadly shootings happened near funeral homes and outside high schools, and claimed the lives of children as young as 10 years old.
The 35% jump in homicides in 2023 was accompanied by major spikes in robberies and carjackings that fueled a yearlong crime wave.
