New York City police said a woman accused of making anti-Muslim statements before throwing her hot coffee at a man in a caught-on-camera attack turned herself in to authorities Tuesday.
Police said Hadasa Bozakkaravani, 48, faces nine charges, including involving hate crime, in connection to a Nov. 7 incident at Edmonds Playground in Brooklyn.
Victim Ashish Prashar said the altercation started when his 18-month-old son approached another boy playing basketball on the blacktop.
That’s when Mr. Prashar said a woman stormed over to him, asked if he supported Hamas and then called him a “terrorist.”
Mr. Prashar recorded part of the incident where a woman is seen throwing her phone and a coffee cup at the man while on the blacktop.
“As I turned back, she threw hot coffee in my face, which if I didn’t put my son down would have burned my son’s face,” he said.
The victim said he was wearing a keffiyeh, a head scarf often associated with Palestinians, during the confrontation.
The district attorney’s office said Ms. Bozakkaravani was expected to be arraigned by Wednesday morning.
