It’s official: The Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals, the District’s professional basketball and hockey franchises, will be moving out of the city to a new home in Alexandria’s Potomac Yard development.
Monumental Sports and Entertainment on Wednesday confirmed its plans to relocate both sports franchises, currently playing at the Capital One Arena in the heart of the city, to a 70-acre site in the Virginia suburbs beginning in 2028.
Final approval for the move will come from the Virginia General Assembly, which is expected to be handled during the upcoming legislative session in January.
