NextImg:Winter wonderland in D.C. means sledding, snowball fights abound

Snow lovers were out and about Monday in the District as the year’s first major winter storm brought plenty of powder to play in.

Parents were seen sledding with their tikes down steep hills and others were joining in an organized snowball fight taking place at Meridian Hill Park in Northwest.

Held during the city’s first major snowfall of the year, people of all ages turned out to hurl some projectiles at each other.

The fight itself started as one large circle and a whistle signaling when to launch the snowballs. But the attendees — well over 100 of them — split off into small groups that organized countdowns for participants before the rounds that followed.

One snowballer, who asked that his name not be used because he was skipping work, told The Washington Times that he nailed a couple of people whenever he joined the fracas.

He said he enjoyed watching peoples’ dogs jump to try and catch the flying snowballs most in a sort of no man’s land that separated two sides of participants.

Special guest appearances included G-Wiz, the Washington Wizards mascot, who ran through the middle of the snowball fight before taking aim himself.

One passer-by, Joey, lingered on the periphery, telling The Times he was content to watch the action from afar.

He said he, too, was playing hooky from work to take in the snowy sights, which included some kids building snowmen along the park’s main drag.
