A fire broke out Thursday at a wood recycling yard run by the Baltimore Department of Recreation and Parks, causing various closures. The fire was still blazing Friday.

At about 5:10 p.m., a city employee saw a small fire at the Camp Small wood recycling yard and called 911. While the Baltimore City Fire Department arrived at the scene quickly, high winds and ample fuel in the yard helped spread the fire fast, the office of Mayor Brandon Scott said in a release.

“When they got here, they discovered a rapidly evolving fire that was in a large pile of trees and logs in a large area. This stage is just that, lots of trees, logs, stumps and things like that,” Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said at a briefing, according to The Associated Press.

No injuries have been reported, and the ultimate cause of the fire is still being investigated.

The fire temporarily shut down U.S. Interstate 83 in both directions and led Maryland Transit Administration buses to detour from Camp Small.

Baltimore’s light rail line between the North Avenue and Falls Road stops was closed for Friday, as were Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and Western High School. The Maryland Zoo was also closed to the public.

As of 8:10 a.m. Friday, the northbound and southbound lanes of I-83 were reopened, though the off-ramps to Cold Spring Lane where Camp Small is located remained closed, the Maryland State Police said on X.
