NextImg:White House: At least 27 Americans killed in Israel, 14 missing

At least 27 American citizens have died amid the violence in Israel, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Thursday.

The number of Americans who remain unaccounted for is 14, Mr. Kirby said, a slight drop from the 17 missing as of Wednesday.

The American death toll continues to rise as more information comes out since the surprise terror attack by Hamas on Israelis over the weekend. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier Thursday that at least 25 Americans were killed.

Mr. Kirby said the administration has not determined how many Americans are being held hostage by Hamas, but maintains the number is less than a handful.

On Wednesday he acknowledged the administration had no details about proof of life, condition or whereabouts of the hostages.

U.S. officials are working with Israel, Qatar and other allies in the Middle East to secure the release of hostages, according to Mr. Kirby.

Speaking about the hostages Wednesday, President Biden insisted his administration is doing “a lot” to bring them home.

“I have not given up hope on bringing these folks home. But the idea that I’m going to stand here before you and tell you what I’m doing is bizarre,” he said.
