The man who climbed up the WAMU-FM radio tower in the District killed himself Friday morning after staying up on the tower for days.

The Metropolitan Police Department said the barricade situation that began Tuesday at the tower was over. Police, who told WAMU-FM that it was a suicide, did not name the deceased individual.

American University, which owns WAMU-FM’s operating license, confirmed to news media that the man had died.

“The Metropolitan Police Department, DC Fire, and AUPD response teams worked tirelessly over the past three days to safely conclude the situation, but unfortunately, the outcome was tragic,” said American University Vice President Bronté Burleigh-Jones.

The 321-foot tower, the city’s tallest FM broadcast antenna, was powered down during the days-long standoff. WAMU-FM continued to broadcast out of a backup tower in Virginia.
