Fairfax County police said Sunday they arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection to a shooting after his mother turned him in to authorities.

Police said the boy was charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in a shooting that left a 19-year-old man with injuries to his arm and lower body.

The victim’s non-life-threatening wounds were treated at a hospital.

Police said officers originally responded to the shooting just after 5 p.m. Saturday in the 7400 block of Vernon Square Drive.

Investigators said the man was walking to an apartment when the juvenile suspect approached the victim, flashed a gun and shot him.

Authorities said the boy fled after the shooting. Police didn’t believe the attack was random.

The suspect’s mother was contacted after police said they were able to identify the boy. The mother turned her child in to the Mount Vernon Police Station later Saturday.

Police said they haven’t recovered the gun used in the incident.

The boy is being held at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center.
