White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt laid out some of the odd places the U.S. Agency of International Development spent funds, amid the upheaval of the agency by the Trump administration and Elon Musk.
Speaking outside the White House Monday, Ms. Leavitt read from a list showcasing the “crap” that the agency has paid for, including “$1.5 million to advance DEI in Serbia’s workplaces, $70,000 for a production of a DEI musical in Ireland, $47,000 for a transgender opera in Colombia, $32,000 for a transgender comic book in Peru.”
“I don’t know about you, but as an American taxpayer I don’t want my dollars going toward this crap,” she said. “’And I know the American people don’t either, and that’s exactly what Elon Musk has been tasked by President Trump to do, to get the fraud, waste and abuse out of the federal government.”
A fact sheet on the White House website named other questionable places the money went, including over $2 million for electric vehicles in Vietnam, $2 million for sex changes and “LGBT activism” in Guatemala, $6 million to help tourism in Egypt, meals for al-Qaida fighters in Syria, “personalized” birth control devices in developing countries and “irrigation canals, farming equipment and even fertilizer used to support the unprecedented poppy cultivation and heroin production in Afghanistan, benefiting the Taliban.”
President Trump, who has thrown the future of USAID in doubt, warns that it has been steered far from its original mission by “radical left lunatics” who were in charge of the agency.
Founded by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, the agency derived its original purpose from the Marshall Plan, which helped Europe recover from World War II.
The agency’s focus shifted in the 1970s away from providing “technical and capital assistance programs” to spending taxpayer dollars on sustaining “basic human needs.” Its mission since then includes providing food and nutrition, population planning, health and education.
Mr. Musk, who has become a top adviser to the president and is the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, has gone to war with the agency and wants to see it shut down. He said Monday that Mr. Trump is on board with closing it.
“USAID is a criminal organization,” Mr. Musk said on X. “Time for it to die.”
Emails sent to USAID staffers directed them to stay away from its headquarters in Washington Monday.
