Russian fighters in Ukraine who are part of non-official military organizations are unlikely to receive adequate medical care after being wounded in combat, British officials said Monday.

Wounded members of the Wagner Group mercenary force and the Storm-Z units comprised of prisoners are “highly likely” to be returned to combat duties with unhealed wounds, including after losing a limb, U.K. military intelligence officials said on X.

“This follows credible reports that members of Storm-Z, Donetsk militias, and Wagner Group have frequently received minimal or no treatment,” British officials said in their latest battlefield assessment of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

U.K. intelligence analysts said convict recruits, who make up a large segment of Storm-Z units, are “especially liable” to receive poor treatment. They often lack the proper paperwork to access military hospitals used by official Russian forces.

“While reducing pressure on an overburdened military medical system, the lack of proper in-theater medical attention will transfer the administrative and medical burden back to troops’ home units,” U.K. officials said.
