The U.K. government requisitioned 66 new U.S. flags for President Trump’s state visit last month over concerns that the old ones ready to fly had the wrong shade of red.
The British government gets the flags used for official purposes, including state visits, from the Flag Consultancy.
Nick Farley, the company’s managing director, told The Telegraph that 66 hand-sewn flags worth $70,000 in total were ordered for Mr. Trump’s state visit in mid-September.
“Their red is now stronger than the red on the [Union Jack],” Mr. Farley told the outlet, adding, “The Americans decided that the red we use, which is called R01, wasn’t right for them, and that they wanted a cherry red instead, so we had to buy all new flags for this visit.”
Pictures posted by the Flag Consultancy on Instagram show the newly ordered flags hanging alongside Britain’s Union Jack.
Mr. Farley speculated that the old U.S. flags may have faded or changed tone due to sun damage.
The president was ultimately pleased with his reception during his stay in the U.K., his second state visit to the country.
“This is truly one of the highest honors of my life — such respect for you and such respect for your country,” Mr. Trump said at a state dinner hosted on Sept. 17 by King Charles III.
