NextImg:UAW begins courting nonunion autoworkers with sign-up program

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain is making good on his promise to unionize nonunion automakers in the U.S.

This week, nearly 150,000 of them at 13 car companies are signing union cards on UAW’s website as part of a worker organization campaign.

According to the union, the automakers involved include BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Lucid, Mazda, Mercedes, Nissan, Rivian, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.

“To all the autoworkers out there working without the benefits of a union: Now it’s your turn,” Mr. Fain said this week in a video statement.

The effort comes just weeks after the union signed collective agreements with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, securing massive pay bumps and benefit increases for their members.

The now-ratified contracts have likely spooked some nonunion automakers into increasing wages and benefits for some of their workers. Since the announcement of the deals, Nissan and Hyundai have announced pay increases.
