A pair of Virginia Beach Police Department officers died after being shot during a traffic stop.
“We are devastated to confirm the deaths of two of our officers, who were shot in the line of duty. … This is still very much an active investigation. … There is no active threat. We ask for your patience and understanding as we work to put the pieces of this tragic event together, make notifications and grieve the loss of two of our own,” VBPD wrote on social media Saturday.
The department didn’t identify either of the slain police officers, nor did it mention the circumstances of their deaths in their post.
Police told Portsmouth’s WAVY-TV that the shooting came after the traffic stop was initiated at the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway and Wendfield Drive in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at around 11:30 p.m. Friday.
One of the officers died that night, while the other died in the hospital from their injuries the next morning.
