The 97th Academy Awards’ nominations were released Thursday, with two musicals in the running for best picture and best actress for the first time since the 1960s.

The two are “Wicked” and “Emilia Perez,” adapted from director Jacques Audiard’s opera.

In 1969, the two musicals nominated for best picture were eventual winner “Oliver!” and Barbra Streisand’s debut film, “Funny Girl.”

The other movies nominated for best picture are “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “I’m Still Here,” “Nickel Boys” and “The Substance.”

The musicals announced Thursday also netted best actress in a leading role: Karla Sofia Gascon for “Emilia Perez,” the first openly transgender actor ever nominated for an Oscar, and Cynthia Erivo for “Wicked.”

The other best actress nominees are Mikey Madison for “Anora,” Demi Moore for “The Substance” and Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here.”

It’s just the second time two actresses in musicals are vying for the Oscar. In 1965, Debbie Reynolds was nominated for “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” and Julie Andrews for “Mary Poppins.” Ms. Andrews won.

“Emilia Perez” garnered the most nominations for any movie, at 13, while “Wicked” tied for second most at 10 with “The Brutalist.” The Bob Dylan biopic and music-based “A Complete Unknown” scored eight nominations.

“Dune: Part Two” was the only franchise movie to garner more than one nomination — for best picture, cinematography, sound, visual effects and production design.
