Two men suspected of breaking into vehicles in Pennsylvania and being chased by state police were found dead Wednesday in a submerged SUV after driving off an embankment.
The Pennsylvania State Police received reports of alleged car break-ins in Antrim Township at 12:52 a.m. The caller provided a description of a car as well as its license plate number, police said in a release.
The suspect car was a green Jeep SUV, according to WGAL-TV.
Police did not say whether the car they pursued was reported stolen, or whether the purported break-ins were geared toward stealing items inside cars or the cars themselves.
State troopers spotted the suspect car and attempted multiple times to do a traffic stop, but were unable to as the car fled.
The car drove off the road and through farms and fields before going over the side of a steep embankment, landing upside down and underwater in an irrigated cornfield, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Megan Frazer told The Associated Press.
The car dropped 30 feet into a pool of water 4 feet deep, according to WGAL-TV.
“I came to the edge of the hole and saw a car submerged in the water almost completely upside down. I’m assuming they had no idea the ground was going to drop off that quickly in front of them,” farmer Dennis Hissong told WGAL-TV.
Emergency services and fire and rescue personnel were called.
The driver and passenger were found dead in the car, said state police, who did not identify the two men.
