The New York Police Department said officers arrested two men who are accused of beating and slashing a uniformed officer as he tried to remove them from a subway station in the Bronx over the weekend.

Authorities said Marquise Webb and Brian Innocent, both 24, face charges of assault, resisting arrest and other counts related to the attack on Lt. Gypsy Pichardo.

Mr. Innocent also was charged with weapons offenses after police said they recovered a knife, a box cutter and a straight razor from the crime scene.

Police said Lt. Pichardo responded to a call about a fight at the 238th Street subway station Saturday night, when the two suspects began striking his head and face.

Lt. Pichardo withstood the attack and chased after the suspects, who were caught shortly afterward.

“He’s home now,” Louis Turco, president of the NYPD Lieutenants Benevolent Association, told WABC. “He has stitches in two places in his face. He’s going to a specialist for his eye. He’s recovering … It was a vicious attack by these individuals.”

Both suspects pleaded not guilty Sunday in court.
