A pair of people were found dead from gunshot wounds in a dorm room at the University of Colorado campus in Colorado Springs on Friday.
Campus police got word of shots fired in a dorm just before 6 a.m. Upon getting into the room, they found two people dead, the Colorado Springs Police Department said.
The department then took over the investigation at the behest of campus police.
Police didn’t provide any identifying characteristics for the deceased and are in the process of notifying their families.
Later Friday, the CSPD said in a social media post that both deaths would be investigated as homicides, writing that “this incident does not appear to be a murder-suicide.”
The UCCS campus has been closed for the weekend.
“My heart is overcome by grief as unspeakable violence has reached into our home. It is with the utmost sadness that I write to you about an isolated shooting incident that took place early this morning on our campus. We are in shock as we process this tragic loss of two lives,” UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet wrote in an address to the school community Friday.
In a post on X, Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade wrote, “The university is a family, and it is also part of our Colorado Springs family. Together we mourn, and together we pray for peace and comfort in this dark time for the family and friends of the deceased.”
