Police in Texas said two bystanders were shot and killed late Saturday after a brawl escalated into deadly gunfire during a Juneteenth celebration.

Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks said both onlookers were mortally wounded at Old Settlers Park around 10:50 p.m. Saturday when at least one person pulled out a gun and opened fire.

Chief Banks said the slain victims, who police didn’t identify, were not involved in the melee that broke out between two groups of people near the event’s vendor area.

“The unfortunate part is that we had innocent victims as a result of this reckless actions of certain subjects,” Chief Banks said at a press conference early Sunday. “We’re here to celebrate Juneteenth and the unfortunate part is these folks could care less about someone’s life and take someone’s life and on a day we’re here to celebrate community.”

Police said multiple people also had to be hospitalized, but didn’t say exactly how many victims or what kind of injuries the victims suffered.

Austin-Travis County EMS said its medics took four adults and two kids with “potentially serious injuries” to local trauma centers.

Chief Banks said investigators are still working to determine the number of shooters who opened fire.

Authorities said the shooting suspect, or suspects, remain at large, but didn’t share a description of any people of interest.

Chief Banks said the shooting is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.
