Rep. Yvette Clarke of New York, the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, on Tuesday said President Trump should be impeached over the National Guard’s deployment in Los Angeles.

She said that while Mr. Trump’s action amounted to a high crime, it wasn’t yet time to pursue impeachment.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” Ms. Clarke said at a press conference with other House Democrats.

At the same event at the Capitol, Rep. Jimmy Gomez of California accused Mr. Trump of creating “chaos is the bait and the switch is the switch is a constitutional crisis and power grab.”

Trump created this political distraction to divide us and keep our focus away from his policies that are wreaking havoc on our economy and hurting working families,” he said. “He’s not keeping us safe, he’s not restoring order. He’s ratcheting up the tension, wishing for it to reach a boiling point, and we all knew that this day would come.”

Democratic leaders have dispelled previous efforts to impeach Mr. Trump during the current Congress, including one from Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan.

Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar of California stressed that “House Democrats aren’t focused on impeachment today” when he spoke to reporters following Ms. Clarke’s remark.

“We are focused on holding the president and House Republicans accountable for the policies that attack the basic needs, like health care and food assistance,” he said.
