NextImg:Trump warns GOP of potential Democrat interference in confirmation hearings

President-elect Donald Trump gave a New Year’s Eve message to Republican senators, urging them to not let Democrats block his Cabinet nominees.

“We just won a Historic Landslide and Mandate from the American People, but Senate Democrats are organizing to improperly stall and delay the confirmation process of many of our Great Nominees,” Mr. Trump posted Tuesday on Truth Social. “They will try all sorts of tricks starting very soon. Republicans must not allow them to do that.

“We have a Country to run, and many big problems to solve, mostly created by Democrats. REPUBLICANS, BE SMART AND TOUGH!!!”

Confirmation hearings are expected to start after Congress returns from its holiday break. Pete Hegseth, Mr. Trump’s choice for defense secretary, has his confirmation hearing on Jan. 14.

Mr. Trump will enjoy a Republican-controlled Congress, with a 53-47 seat majority in the Senate.

Some nominees are expected to sail through the process, especially Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as secretary of state and New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations.

Others might have a more difficult time. Mr. Hegseth has been accused of misconduct, and Tulsi Gabbard, the pick for director of national intelligence, has been criticized as being sympathetic to Russia. Both are wildly popular with the MAGA faithful, who call the allegations fantasy.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the pick to lead the Health and Human Services Department, might also have a tough time over his views on vaccines and fluoride in water, among other stances on what food Americans should avoid.

Amid the debate, one nominee, former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, pulled his name from consideration for attorney general. Filling that spot is former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The Trump team instructed all nominees to stay off social media ahead of confirmation hearings.

“While this instruction has been delivered previously, I am reiterating that no member of the incoming administration or Transition speaks for the United States or the President-elect himself,” incoming chief of staff Susie Wiles said in a Sunday memo obtained by the New York Post.

“Accordingly, all intended nominees should refrain from any public social media posts without prior approval of the incoming White House counsel,” she wrote.

Several nominees met with Republican and Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill before the holiday break to share their plans and see where their support lies.
