President Trump on Wednesday pushed for the death penalty against the ex-convict accused of murdering a Ukrainian war refugee with a knife, seemingly at random, while the two were aboard a public transit train in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“The animal who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine, who came to America searching for peace and safety, should be given a ’Quick’ (there is no doubt!) Trial, and only awarded the death penalty,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social. “There can be no other option!!!”
The president sounded off a day after federal prosecutors brought murder charges against Decarlos Brown Jr. in the caught-on-camera killing of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska last month.
Officials said the charge of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system could result in Brown, 34, being put to death.
Brown — who has been arrested more than a dozen times and spent six years behind bars — is also facing murder charges in Mecklenburg County.
Surveillance video from Aug. 22 showed Zarutska enter the Lynx Blue Line train car and take a seat in front of the suspect.
Four minutes later, he pulled out a knife and stabbed her three times around her neck, then walked through the train car with the blood-soaked weapon at his side.
Brown was arrested a short time later. Authorities said he is homeless and reportedly was diagnosed with schizophrenia, with his mental competency being evaluated.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said the DOJ “will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable crime, and he will never again see the light of day as a free man.”
