President Trump steered away from comments he made about regime change in Iran, saying Tuesday he rejects it, two days after he suggested it on his social media platform.
“I don’t want it. I’d like to see everything calm down as quickly as possible,” Mr. Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to the NATO summit in The Hague hours after he brokered a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel.
“Regime change takes chaos, and ideally we don’t want to see so much chaos, so we’ll see how it does,” he said.
Mr. Trump’s remarks made some of his longtime supporters cheerful after his previous comments on the matter.
“Trump is the peace president,” Turning Point USA founder and President Charlie Kirk said on X.
Mr. Trump previously suggested he would consider regime change in Iran on a social media post Sunday evening, contradicting several senior administration officials who said earlier in the day that forcing the ouster of Iran’s leadership wasn’t part of the administration’s agenda.
“It’s not politically correct to use the term, ’Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
Steve Bannon, a former White House senior adviser from Mr. Trump’s first term, criticized the statement, saying it could lead to U.S. soldiers going to Iran.
On Monday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican, told OAN host and former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, “The American people are so sick and tired of foreign wars and regime change.”
