President Trump is scheduled to sign an executive order Wednesday barring male-born athletes from girls and women’s sports, fulfilling a campaign promise on an increasingly high-profile issue pitting fairness and safety against against transgender inclusion.
The signing ceremony for the Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports order, which coincides with National Girls and Women in Sports Day, is expected to be attended by a host of prominent advocates for single-sex female sports, including NCAA All-American swimmer Riley Gaines.
The order aligns with Mr. Trump’s previous executive orders declaring the federal government will recognize only two sexes, male and female, and reversing the Biden administration’s rulemaking that added “gender identity” to Title IX, the federal civil-rights law banning sex discrimination in education.
Rep. Nancy Mace, South Carolina Republican, said that the order “reaffirms a fundamental principle: women and girls should not have their privacy, opportunities, scholarships, or safety jeopardized by radical gender ideology.”
“For too long, the Left has sacrificed women’s rights on the altar of woke politics. Women’s sports exist for a reason—because biological differences matter,” said Ms. Mace in a statement. “No amount of activism, corporate pressure, or lies can erase reality — men are biologically different from women.”
The LGBTQ group Athlete Ally decried the move and vowed to continue pursuing “a future of sports where everyone belongs.”
“Our hearts break for the trans youth who will no longer be able to know the joy of playing sports as their full and authentic selves,” said the organization on Instagram.
Polls show the American public is squarely on Mr. Trump’s side. A New York Times/Ipsos survey released last month found that 79% oppose biological males who identify as female in women’s sports, including 67% of Democrats and 94% of Republicans.
Even so, the Democratic Party has staunchly defended the transgender athletes seeking to compete against girls and women in scholastic sports.
Only two House Democrats joined with Republicans last month in passing H.R. 28, a bill to require scholastic athletes to compete based on their sex at birth.
