Former President Donald Trump will reportedly return to outdoor rallies — but with one change.

According to a CBS News report Thursday, the Secret Service will surround Mr. Trump’s podium with bulletproof glass.

The network cited “two federal law enforcement officials” in its report.

A bulletproof screen is typically reserved for the sitting president, the network reported, but the agency decided to make an exception in Mr. Trump’s case.

The plan was first proposed and pushed by then-Secret Service director Kim Cheatle shortly after the July 13 assassination attempt against Mr. Trump, CBS reported.

The Secret Service declined to comment to CBS News.

The changes come a month after Secret Service security lapses at a rally in Pennsylvania came within an inch of costing Mr. Trump his life.

The agency has come under weeks of blistering criticism for, among other things, not securing a rooftop within rifle range of the main speech podium. The gunman got off eight shots, grazing Mr. Trump, killing rallygoer Corey Comperatore, and wounding two other Trump supporters.

There are now multiple congressional and executive-branch investigations under way, and Ms. Cheatle resigned in the face of bipartisan calls for her firing.
