President Trump on Monday threatened to withhold federal funds from New York City if democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the city’s upcoming mayoral election.
He said Mr. Mamdani “won’t be getting” any federal money if he wins.
“Self-proclaimed New York City Communist, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party. He is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his FAKE Communist promises. He won’t be getting any of it, so what’s the point of voting for him?”
Hours earlier, New York Mayor Eric Adams announced that he was ending his reelection bid. Mr. Adams, a Democrat, had been running as an independent.
With Mr. Adams out of the race, Mr. Mamdani will face former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, another Democrat running as an independent, and Republican Curtis Silwa in the November general election.
Many in New York’s business community and Republicans are alarmed by Mr. Mamdani’s far-left platform, which includes free bus services, government-run grocery stores and higher taxes for wealthy New Yorkers. He also has a history of sharply criticizing the police and Israel.
The departure of Mr. Adams from the race could consolidate Mr. Mamdani’s opponents behind Mr. Cuomo. Polls have shown Mr. Mamdani with a lead in the race, but that shrinks against Mr. Cuomo in a one-on-one matchup.
Mr. Mamdani has blamed the Trump administration for Mr. Adam’s dropping out, accusing the president of meddling in the election.
“Donald Trump and his billionaire donors can determine the actions of Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo, but they can’t dictate the results of this election,” he said in an interview with NY1.
