President Trump on Tuesday happily acknowledged a commendation from former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for the president’s decision to send B-2 bombers into Iran on Saturday to strike three key nuclear sites.
The Bush family has had a frosty relationship with Mr. Trump since the president defeated Mr. Bush during the contentious 2016 GOP presidential primary.
“Thank you to Jeb Bush — Very much appreciated!” Mr. Trump said to Mr. Bush, chairman of the nonprofit and nonpartisan organization United Against a Nuclear Iran.
Mr. Bush wrote on X that “President Trump’s decision to neutralize Iran’s regime’s nuclear program is a watershed moment [that] reasserts U.S. strength, restores deterrence, and sends an unmistakable message to rogue regimes: the era of impunity is over.”
The Bush family has largely remained silent about Mr. Trump following the 2016 election, when Mr. Trump, then the surprise Republican nominee for president, relentlessly criticized the foreign policies of Mr. Bush’s older brother, former President George W. Bush.
He also famously derided Jeb Bush, who was running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination against Mr. Trump and others, with a moniker he’s never since been able to shake: “low energy.”
George W. Bush did not attend Mr. Trump’s 2017 inauguration and skipped the traditional inaugural lunch for former presidents following Mr. Trump’s 2024 reelection.
Neither George W. Bush nor Jeb Bush had indicated how they planned to vote in the 2024 election. However, Jeb Bush’s son George P. Bush endorsed Mr. Trump’s reelection bids in both 2020 and 2024.
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the year of President Trump’s first inauguration.
