President-elect Donald Trump touted the return of TikTok and reiterated how the social media app helped him earn the support of young people in the November election.
“Can you believe what I’ll do to win an election?” Mr. Trump joked about his TikTok presence during his Victory Rally on Sunday at the Capital One Arena in Washington.
“And we went on TikTok and Republicans have never won the young vote. They win a lot of votes but they’ve never won the youth vote — we won the youth vote by 36 points,” he said. “So, I like TikTok.”
TikTok went dark on American users’ phones Saturday night ahead of a ban that President Biden signed into law and the Supreme Court said could be enforced.
However, it came back online Sunday after Mr. Trump said he would sign an executive order to extend the deadline for the app to be sold to an American operation.
“I’m asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark! I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security. The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order,” Mr. Trump wrote Sunday on Truth Social.
He proposed a “50% ownership position in a joint venture.”
At the rally, he said “we need to save TikTok.”
“Frankly, we have no choice, we have to save it,” he said. “A lotta jobs. We don’t want to give our business to China, we don’t want to give our business to other people.”
He said the joint venture is without risk.
“All we’re doing is giving them the approval, without which they don’t have anything,” he said. “Whether you like TikTok or not we’re gonna make a lot of money.”
