President Trump took the oath of office as the 47th U.S. president Monday shortly after noon, drawing cheers from the Rotunda audience and a military artillery salute outside the Capitol’s walls.
Mr. Trump smiled as Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. asked him to uphold the Constitution and protect America.
“So help me God,” Mr. Trump said.
He then kissed his wife, first lady Melania Trump, and his children.
Mr. Trump used a Bible given to him by his mother in 1955 to mark his Sunday Church Primary School graduation at First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, New York.
Vice President J.D. Vance took his oath of office, joined by his wife, Usha, and their children.
Sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, he placed his hand on a King James Bible that belonged to his maternal great-grandmother.
He smiled broadly and hugged his children, also getting a pat on the shoulder from Mr. Trump.
