Former President Donald Trump said he’s all for ending the double taxation that United States citizens face when they live abroad.
Currently, Americans living in other countries pay taxes to both the country they live in and the U.S., while most other countries have systems that base taxes only on where they live.
“I support ending the double taxation of overseas Americans,” Mr. Trump said in a statement that was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Mr. Trump has consistently talked about his tax policy ideas, including no taxes on tops, tax cuts, overtime pay and no cuts to Social Security benefits. Ending taxes for those abroad is another way to appeal to a specific demographic of voters.
“Fellow Americans living abroad, your vote is more important than ever,” Mr. Trump said in the statement.
“No matter where you are, your voice can make a difference,” he said.
However, Trump campaign officials offered no additional insight to the Journal about what the policy change would look like.
An estimated 4.4 million U.S. citizens live abroad, and roughly 2.8 million of them are of voter age, according to the Federal Voting Assistance Program.
A person familiar with the matter told the outlet that Mr. Trump hopes this plan will appeal to those abroad, especially those living in Israel.
