President Trump on Monday signed an executive order to withdraw the U.S. from the World Health Organization.

“Oooh that’s a big one,” Mr. Trump said at the Oval Office as he was handed the executive order to sign.

He railed against the amount of money the U.S. pays into the organization, saying that China has more people but pays less.

“It seemed a little unfair to me,” he said. “So that wasn’t the reason, but I dropped out.”

The U.S. is the largest donor to the Switzerland-based agency of the United Nations that focuses on global public health issues.

Mr. Trump threatened to pull the U.S. out of WHO in 2020 because of the organization’s poor handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Former President Biden undid Mr. Trump’s efforts to withdraw from WHO.

Mr. Trump’s new order gave the same reason for the pullout.

“The United States noticed its withdrawal from the World Health Organization in 2020 due to the organization’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that arose out of Wuhan, China, and other global health crises, its failure to adopt urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of WHO member states,” the order said.

“In addition, the WHO continues to demand unfairly onerous payments from the United States, far out of proportion with other countries’ assessed payments,” it said.

The U.S. has been a part of the organization since its founding in 1948.
