NextImg:Trump says U.S. sanctions, tariffs could be coming if Putin, Zelenskyy fail to meet soon

President Trump said he’ll consider “massive” sanctions and tariffs if Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy don’t set up a meeting within two weeks.

“We’re going to see whether or not they have a meeting,” Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Friday during an announcement about the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by the U.S. “It’ll be interesting to see. If they don’t, why didn’t they have a meeting, because I told them to have a meeting. But I’ll know what I am going to do in two weeks.”

He said at the end of the two weeks, he’ll make a “very important decision, and that’s whether or not it’s massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both, or do we do nothing and say it’s your fight.”

Mr. Trump said he was unhappy with the airstrikes that hit an American-owned electronics factory in Ukraine Thursday.

The president and Mr. Putin met in Alaska a week ago, but went their separate ways without a ceasefire agreement or peace deal. Earlier this week, Mr. Zelenskyy agreed to a potential meeting with Mr. Putin, but Moscow has yet to accept.

The president showed off a picture of himself and Mr. Putin, and said the Russian leader wants to be at the FIFA World Cup in 2026 in the U.S. “very badly.”

“He’s been very respectful of me and of our country, but not so respectful of others,” Mr. Trump said, who added that he was sent the photo and would be signing it.

“He may be coming and he may not, depending on what happens. We have a lot of things happening over the next couple of weeks,” he said.

He joked that he thought it was a “nice” picture of Mr. Putin, but just an “OK” picture of him.
