President Trump on Tuesday said he’s sending his treasury secretary to Ukraine this week to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss accessing Kyiv’s rare earth mineral resources and ending the war with Russia.

In a Truth Social post, Mr. Trump said, “This War MUST and WILL END SOON — Too much Death and Destruction,” and that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will go to Ukraine.

“The U.S. has spent BILLIONS of Dollars Globally, with little to show,” the president wrote. “WHEN AMERICA IS STRONG, THE WORLD IS AT PEACE.”

Mr. Trump said last week that he wants to meet with Mr. Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war.

The president also said he wanted to talk to Mr. Zelenskyy about Ukraine’s rare earth minerals and acquiring them in exchange for the money the U.S. has spent supporting that country.

Mr. Zelenskyy said he’s open to a mineral partnership, telling Reuters, “If we are talking about a deal, then let’s do a deal; we are only for it.”

He added, “The Americans helped the most, and therefore the Americans should earn the most. And they should have this priority, and they will. I would also like to talk about this with President Trump.”

Ukraine is rich in rare earth minerals, especially lithium, titanium and graphite, which are crucial for cell phones, hard drives and electric vehicles.
