NextImg:Trump says tariffs on Mexico, Canada will go forward after pause

President Trump said Monday tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico will move forward, after having been put on a pause as the two countries worked to appease him on border security and get him to change his mind.

The president said he was “on time” with the tariffs that he promised to put on the two countries as a way to stop the influx of immigrants and drugs over the U.S. southern and northern borders. He agreed on Feb. 3 to a 30-day pause.

“We’ve been mistreated very badly by many countries, not just Canada and Mexico,” he said during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. “We’ve been taken advantage of.”

“The tariffs are going forward. On time, on schedule,” he said.

He said the “abuse” has been going on for years and that he doesn’t blame other countries, but instead he blamed Democrats who were in charge during the last four years and made the trade agreements.

“I look at some of these agreements, I read them at night and I say, ‘Who would ever sign a thing like this?’” he said. “So the tariffs will go forward, yes.”

He said he wants everything to be reciprocal, saying it will be “very good” for the U.S.

Mr. Trump had called for 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada and another 10% tariffs on oil, gas and electricity from Canada.
