President Trump said he’s willing to walk away from the negotiating table if his high-stakes summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin goes awry.
“I think it’s going to work out very well, and if it doesn’t, I’m going to head back home real fast,” Mr. Trump said in a Fox News interview that will air later Friday.
Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked the president if he would walk if the meeting fails.
“I would walk, yeah,” Mr. Trump responded.
Mr. Trump said Thursday he’d leave early if the summit with Mr. Putin doesn’t work out.
“If it’s a bad meeting, I’m not calling anybody — I’m going home. … But if it’s a good meeting, I’m going to call [Ukrainian] President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy and the European Leaders,” he said in a Fox Radio interview.
The summit will be held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.
Both sides plan to discuss what Russia has to do to end the war.
Ahead of the summit, Mr. Trump said he thinks Mr. Putin is going to make a deal, adding that there was a “25% chance” the talks would fail.
Mr. Trump described Friday’s meeting as “setting the table” for trilateral talks with Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelenskyy.
