NextImg:Trump says he can get a peace deal done for Ukraine as British PM arrives

President Trump on Thursday welcomed to the White House British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the second of three world leaders visiting this week, as European and Ukraine leaders seek a seat at the table for peace talks with Moscow.

The leader arrived in an SUV flying both the Stars and Stripes and Union Jack.

When asked by reporters if he could get a peace deal on Ukraine, Mr. Trump replied, “Yes.”

Mr. Starmer’s trip comes just two days after French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Washington and ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s expected visit on Friday. All three leaders are conferring with Mr. Trump to air their concerns that his aggressive efforts to end Russia’s war on Ukraine will result in conceding too much to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Since returning to the White House last month, Mr. Trump has angered U.S. allies in Europe by with his overtures to Mr. Putin, hurling insults at Mr. Zelenskyy by calling him a “dictator,” and insisting Ukraine repay the U.S. for its financial support.

Last week, the Trump administration held peace talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia but excluded Ukraine and other European allies. This week, the U.S. refused to sign resolutions at the United Nations blaming Russia for the war, which has lasted over three years.

Mr. Starmer believes a rushed peace deal with Russia that doesn’t include Ukraine or European nations could lead to further instability in Europe, which could come back to haunt the U.S. It was a similar argument that Mr. Macron raised on Monday.

Both Mr. Starmer and Mr. Macron have endorsed the idea of using their troops as a peacekeeping force to provide security guarantees for Ukraine. However, Mr. Starmer said he would only commit British troops alongside other European nations and “with the right conditions in place.”

The leaders have argued that using European troops in Ukraine can only work with the support of the U.S., an idea that Mr. Trump had dismissed. Although the U.S. won’t commit to boots on the ground, it could provide aerial intelligence, surveillance and support, and a quick response in case the truce is breached.

The meeting on Thursday is Mr. Trump’s second with his British counterpart. They met in September with a two-hour dinner at Trump Tower in New York, when Mr. Starmer’s team described the dinner as warm and Mr. Trump as “a gracious host.”

Mr. Zelenskyy is expected to be in Washington to sign a contentious agreement with Mr. Trump on rare earth minerals. Mr. Trump has depicted the deal as a way for the U.S. to recoup the billions spent to help Ukraine fend off Russian invaders.

The Ukrainian leader has opposed the deal because it does not offer any specific security guarantees.
