NextImg:Trump rails against renewing government’s spy powers: ‘KILL FISA’

Former President Donald Trump vehemently called on House Republicans to kill the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which is the government’s most powerful tool to spy on foreigners.

“KILL FISA, IT WAS ILLEGALLY USED AGAINST ME, AND MANY OTHERS,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday. “THEY SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN!!!”

His post comes just hours before the House is expected to hold a procedural vote to advance the legislation. It’s another headache for House Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican, who is struggling to get the terrorism-fighting tool renewed this week.

FISA powers are set to expire on April 19, and the House is expected to vote to reauthorize the spying power for another five years. Section 702 lets the government collect large amounts of digital data, including emails, texts and phone calls, from foreigners living abroad, but sometimes Americans inadvertently get swept up in the surveillance.

The program has always been controversial since its inception in 2007, which is why it needs to be renewed so often. One of the main controversial points is when the FBI wants to search for an American’s identity in the data without a warrant, which the agency has been known to abuse.
