NextImg:Trump rails against Jack Smith after court filing reveals that the special counsel resigned

President-elect Donald Trump slammed special counsel Jack Smith as “deranged” after Mr. Smith resigned from the Department of Justice and gave up the federal prosecutions he was pursuing against Mr. Trump.

Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country,” Mr. Trump posted early Sunday. “After spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed!”

Mr. Smith resigned Friday in a court filing to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida.

“The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and separated from the Department on January 10,” a filing footnote read.

Mr. Trump also posted on Sunday morning that “the stench of deranged Jack Smith and his thugs is GONE.”

“They were sent packing after spending over $100,000,000, destroying the lives of many people and families, who will never be the same again. Deranged Jack accomplished nothing, except to show what complete losers my political opponents are!!!” the president-elect posted.

In the filing that announced his resignation, Mr. Smith was trying to urge Judge Cannon to not extend her injunction on the release of the final report on the Trump classified documents case.

There are two final reports — one on the classified documents case and another on the 2020 election interference case, both of which were dismissed.

Lawyers for Mr. Trump and two of his co-defendants in the classified documents case sought to have the reports not be released.

The Justice Department said last week it would release the report on the 2020 election interference case, but hold off on the classified documents case report.

The Justice Department argued that “since the President-elect is no longer a defendant in any special counsel matter” then there is no need to block the first of two volumes from coming out.
