President Trump thanked the Justice Department, jurors and U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon Tuesday after “evil” Ryan Routh was found guilty of attempting to assassinate him on his golf course two months before the 2024 election.

Routh, 58, faces life in prison following a verdict that found him guilty of attempting to assassinate Mr. Trump and of four additional charges, including assault on a federal officer and various firearm violations.

“This was an evil man with an evil intention, and they caught him,” Mr. Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Routh is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 18, and Mr. Trump will have an opportunity to provide a victim impact statement.

Prosecutors said Routh was determined to kill Mr. Trump and waited for nearly 10 hours in the bushes at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach with a loaded weapon on Sept. 15, 2024.

Mr. Trump was headed to the sixth hole when a Secret Service agent moving ahead of the president spotted a rifle protruding out of the shrubs. Routh fired at the agent and fled, but was caught by local sheriff’s deputies.

Mr. Trump, in his Truth Social post, thanked the Secret Service, Florida’s Department of Law Enforcement, and “the wonderful person who spotted him running from the site of the crime, and acted by following him, and getting all information on car type and license plate to the Sheriff’s Office, IMMEDIATELY, which led to his arrest and conviction.”

The witness, the president said, had “incredible instinct and foresight.” He called the verdict a “very big moment for JUSTICE IN AMERICA!”

The incident came two months after another would-be assassin wounded Mr. Trump with a rifle shot that grazed his ear at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A rally attendee was killed. The shooter was shot dead by a Secret Service counter-sniper team.
