NextImg:Trump picks lawyer who won his presidential immunity case for solicitor general

President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that one of his lawyers, Dean John Sauer, is his nominee for the U.S. Solicitor General.

“John is a deeply accomplished, masterful appellate attorney, who clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia in the United States Supreme Court, served as Solicitor General of Missouri for six years, and has extensive experience practicing before the U.S. Supreme Court and other Appellate Courts,” Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Sauer represented Mr. Trump in his Supreme Court case earlier this year over presidential immunity from criminal prosecution.

He secured a 6-3 ruling in July where the justices said a president enjoys immunity from prosecution for core presidential functions, presumed immunity for other official acts but no immunity for unofficial conduct.

The ruling was seen as a win for Mr. Trump because it largely delayed special counsel Jack Smith’s prosecutions against him. Those prosecutions are now unwinding, after Mr. Trump’s victory in last week’s election.

Mr. Trump said the immunity ruling was “key to defeating the unConstitutional campaign of Lawfare against me and the entire MAGA Movement.”

Mr. Sauer served as solicitor general for the state of Missouri for six years.

As solicitor general, he will represent the United States in oral arguments before the Supreme Court.
