President Trump on Tuesday bemoaned the victims of a mass shooting at a ritzy Manhattan skyscraper and praised the slain NYPD officer who made “the ultimate sacrifice.”
In a Truth Social post, Mr. Trump said he was briefed on the shooting of Monday evening at 345 Park Ave. He expressed confidence in law enforcement’s ability to “get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence.”
“My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer who made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless the New York Police Department and God Bless New York,” he wrote.
The statement came hours after the attack by 27-year-old Shane Tamura, who, according to the New York Police Department, began shooting inside the lobby of the office building, which houses Blackstone, the NFL and other famous companies.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura “immediately” opened fire with his AR-15 style rifle and began “spraying” the lobby with gunshots, killing NYPD Officer Didarul Islam before boarding an elevator that took him to the building’s 33rd floor. There, Ms. Tisch said, he continued shooting before turning the weapon on himself and taking his own life.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams alleged that Tamura was targeting the NFL because the shooter was convinced he had CTE, a brain disease, from his days playing high school football.
Tamura had come from Las Vegas to carry out the massacre, authorities said.
Mr. Trump is in Scotland, where he met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He spent Tuesday morning playing 18 holes at his new country club in Scotland and was to return to Washington later in the day.
