Golfer Bryson DeChambeau and President Trump turned the White House’s South Lawn into a par 3 on Monday. The pair wedged shots onto the practice green before heading to Trump National in Virginia to take more shots off a tee.
The president and the LIV Tour star have a longtime friendship, so much so that DeChambeau joined Mr. Trump on stage in November to celebrate his electoral victory. The Republican also appeared on DeChambeau’s YouTube channel in July for a video that has racked up more than 15 million views.
The duo might have a similar style when they partner up on the course, but Mr. Trump confessed that he can’t match DeChambeau’s famed drives.
“We play golf a lot together; it’s not a very pleasant experience for me because I always consider myself a reasonably long hitter,” Mr. Trump said. “My wife says, ’Are you as long as Bryson?’ I say, ’Yeah, sort of, pretty close.’ It’s not close.”
DeChambeau returned the praise, comparing the president to 15-time major champion Tiger Woods.
“I played with him in the 2017, 2018 and 2019 time frame. You could tell there was a difference, a presence difference,” the reigning U.S. Open champion told reporters. “Much like yourself, Mr. President. You walk into an area, and it is just different. He has had that aura about him.”
The president in April said he hoped to orchestrate a merger between the LIV and PGA tours, but the organizations have not provided any updates since then.
DeChambeau is in the Washington area for this weekend’s LIV Virginia event at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, a final tuneup before the June 12-15 U.S. Open at Pennsylvania’s Oakmont Country Club.
