President Trump may get to see his face on a coin for America’s 250th birthday next year, new photos from the Treasury Department reveal.
Mr. Trump’s likeness may appear on a commemorative $1 coin for the celebration, with first drafts of the coin’s design released Friday.
“No fake news here,” U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach posted on X in response to images of the coin on X. “These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real. Looking forward to sharing more soon, once the obstructionist shutdown of the United States government is over.”
On the front side of the coin, Mr. Trump’s side profile appears with “LIBERTY” at the top and “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the bottom with the dates 1776 and 2026.
On the other side is a picture of Mr. Trump pumping his fist with “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT” at the top and an American flag behind his head.
According to U.S. law, only deceased presidents can legally have their image on a coin, and only if they’ve been dead two years.
The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act, passed in 2020 in anticipation of the 250th anniversary, lets the Treasury Department mint the $1 coins to celebrate.
It also says, “No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design on the reverse of specified coins.”
A Treasury spokesperson told Axios, “While a final $1 coin design has not yet been selected to commemorate the United States’ semiquincentennial, this first draft reflects well the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of immense obstacles.”
