President Trump on Tuesday said the U.S. knows where Iran has hidden Ayatollah Ali Khamenei while Israeli bombs drop.
“We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there — We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now,” Mr. Trump wrote on social media. “But we don’t want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin.”
In another post Tuesday, he called for Iran’s “unconditional surrender” in all caps.
He said earlier, “We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran.”
He added, “Iran had good sky trackers and other defensive equipment, and plenty of it, but it doesn’t compare to American made, conceived and manufactured ‘stuff.’ Nobody does it better than the good ol’ USA.”
This is the first time he used “we” to refer to the attacks on Iran, which is a shift from his previous attempts to distance the U.S. from Israel’s campaign.
After leaving Canada’s Group of Seven summit early Monday, Mr. Trump urged the 9.5 million residents of Tehran to flee.
“What a shame, and waste of human life. … Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He left the G7 early “because of what’s going on in the Middle East,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Israel and Iran have launched strikes at each other for five days now, killing civilians as well as key Iranian leaders.
Mr. Trump has urged Iran to get to the negotiating table and sign a deal to end its nuclear program.
“I’ve been negotiating. I told them to do the deal. They should have done the deal. Their cities have been blown to pieces, lost a lot of people. They should have done the deal. I told them, ‘Do the deal.’ So, I don’t know. I’m not too much in the mood to negotiate,” he told reporters on Air Force One on his way back from Canada.
Iran argues its nuclear program is peaceful.
