NextImg:Trump calls for review of NGOs, funding halt if ‘national interest’ undermined

President Trump wants all federal funding that goes to nongovernmental organizations to be reviewed and then halted if the dollars go to groups that “undermine the national interest.”

“The United States government has provided significant taxpayer dollars to [NGOs], many of which are engaged in actions that actively undermine the security, prosperity and safety of the American people. It is the policy of my administration to stop funding NGOs that undermine the national interest,” a memo put out by the White House Friday says.

The memo says agencies should “review” the funding and “align future funding” with the interests and goals of the United States and the Trump administration.

Roughly 1.5 million NGOs operate in the U.S., according to the State Department. NGOs have “generally very little restriction on the freedoms of expression and association … under U.S. law.”

The memo did not name which NGOs could be affected.

The memo comes as Mr. Trump and Elon Musk, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, have moved to halt funding to the U.S. Agency for International Development. All direct-hire personnel will be put on administrative leave starting late Friday, leaving the agency with fewer than 300 employees.
