President Trump on Wednesday shrugged off national security concerns over TikTok, the app at the center of bipartisan law to ban it if it’s Chinese parent company doesn’t sell its ownership stake.
“You can say that about everything made in China,” Mr. Trump after Fox News’ Sean Hannity raised the idea that Beijing was using the app to spy on Americans.
“We have so many things made in China. So why don’t they mention that?” Mr. Trump said. “The interesting thing with TikTok though is you’re dealing with a lot of young people. Is it that important for China to be spying on young people? Young people watching crazy videos and things.”
Mr. Trump this week signed an executive order delaying the TikTok ban by 75 days to give the Chinese parent company time to find a new owner. He also suggested that the U. S. Government should become half owner of TikTok in exchange for keeping the app alive.
