UNITED NATIONS — President Trump arrived at the United Nations on Tuesday and immediately tore into the organization, accusing it of doing nothing to end global conflicts that have been waged for decades.
Ticking off a list of seven wars that he claims to have resolved, Mr. Trump questioned why the U.N. didn’t do more, and if it even serves a purpose.
“It’s too bad I had to do these things instead of the United Nations doing them and, sadly, in all cases, the United Nations didn’t even try to help,” Mr. Trump said.
“I was too busy working to save millions of lives … but later I realized that the United Nations wasn’t there for us. They weren’t there,” he continued.
“That being the case, what is the purpose of the United Nations?” Mr. Trump questioned, joking that “all they do is write a really strongly worded letter.
The president said that while he was working to end the wars, he never even received a phone call from the U.N. offering to help.

Mr. Trump also took the U.N. to task for its migration efforts, which it has characterized as a human rights issue.
“Not only is the U.N. not solving problems it should, too often, it’s actually creating new problems for us to solve. The best example is the number one political issue of our time, the crisis of uncontrolled migration,” Mr. Trump told the leaders of nearly 150 nations. “It’s running your countries.”
The president noted that the U.N. spent $372 million to support 624,000 migrants entering the United States, including providing food, shelter, transportation and debit cards.
“The U.N. is supporting people that are illegally coming into the United States, and we have to get them out,” Mr. Trump said.
Mr. Trump also referenced two mechanical failures during his arrival at the United Nations. The escalator to the General Assembly stopped while Mr. Trump and first lady Melania Trump were riding it and his teleprompter wasn’t working.
“These are the two things I got from the United Nations, a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” Mr. Trump said.
